The length of a minute and How to maximize a minute

Greetings everyone this is my second speech in Toastmasters and I would like to share it with you all

I’m sure you are all thinking what in the world is he talking about, who doesn't know how long a minute is?

Well you are right to some extent but I'm confident that the points I will be discussing tonight will bring a new light and understanding to the true length and power of a single minute.

It was a few years back during a lecture in high school which usually took an hour. Sitting there twiddling my fingers I observed the clock on the wall going tick tock tick tock and I realized that a minute was simply 60 short seconds. I made this simple genius deduction that an hour shouldn’t be such a long time; it’s merely 60 full turns of 60 seconds each. So why does this lecture feel like torture like I have been sitting here a life time? This story gave me a glimpse how a minute can feel like eternity.

Another time that I had a different insight to the length of a minute, was one night when I was putting my little one to sleep and after the usual cover me, the goodnight kiss, bathroom run and it’s too hot and it’s too cold, she finally settled down.

I sat down to relax a bit reading a book ,as I got comfortable I hear that little voice saying daddy I need a drink, and I answered ok honey I'll be there in a minute and I continued reading.  Suddenly I feel something tugging at my shirt I look up startled and see my little one is standing near me and saying daddy is it a minute already?  I look on the watch and I see ten minutes have passed, wow that minute really felt like a split second.

True a minute is just short sixty seconds but our emotions distort the actual shortness of the minute making it feel sometimes long as an hour and sometimes short as a split second.

Why this concept is important to understand is simple

The value of a minute is indescribable; what can be done and accomplished in a short amount of time is astonishing, my beloved sales coach chuck Bauer in his book sales mastery writes, the preferred listenable rate of speech is between in 140 and 160 words a minute.

Wow 140 -160 words a minute how much encouragement and how much hurt can we cause with just one minute of talking?

The fact of the matter is, there is an endless amounts of things that we would like to do or achieve, that really wouldn't take up a lot of our time, but this emotional distortion of the length of a minute makes it feel like a huge and long task and encumbers us in doing it.

Let me give you an example to clarify a bit more what I'm saying

Example number 1

How many of you travel on the NJ palisades? Well I'm not a big traveler but on an average I travel the palisades around twenty times a year. Now on the route there is three times a chance to exit right off the highway and view the scenic view.

Every time a pass the signs notifying about the scenic view I say to myself I wish I could just stop for a minute I love looking at scenic views but I don’t,  simply because I feel that I don't have the time, I don’t have five minutes to do something I enjoy?

Example number 2

Working out, my life structure isn't setup for major work outs, so I decided to take a few minutes each night to make a short work out before I go to sleep now we are talking about maybe five minutes a few push ups, sit ups etc but the amount of reasons that I give myself not to do it are laughable, but I a lot has to do by me taking the five minutes and blowing it out of proportion.

By simply calculating and realizing that all that’s needed is a few minutes and seeing how fast a minute passes has made it a lot easier to commit to do it.

Take a breath and stop a minute to think over your life and your day. Think of the small and seemingly insignificant things that are always passing through your mind that you should do, or you would like to do it, but always feel you don't have the time

  •  The phone call to your parents to keep in touch  (even five minutes will do)
  • The little something for your loved one to show that the spark of love has not been extinguished
  •  Road rage giving the other car a few extra seconds before you explode
  •   Putting a little time each day to further and broaden your education can make a huge difference,

Take the time it takes to accomplish the task and put it in the right short minute perspective and it will be easier to do.

Do this and you will find a new world out there in front of you, change that you couldn't imagine, will be right within your grasp, coming to work in smiles each day after a relaxing drive, beautiful flowers and scenery all over the streets just waiting for you to stop and admire them.

Mirror Mirror On the Wall - 5 Rules To Healthy Reflecting

Greetings Everyone,

(if you enjoy this post  please  spread the word and share it with your friends)

You all know the classic children’s book Snow White and the seven dwarfs and the queen looking in to the mirror and saying mirror mirror on the wall who is the fairest one of all and we all know what this led to.

I probably heard this story hundreds of times( I have a little confession to make I still enjoy  reading  the children books ) but I don’t remember  hearing any moral to the story I was so wrapped up in the excitement of the story.

But the time has come to take responsibility and find meaning in life, and I believe that there is a message hidden in all that happens around us waiting to be discovered and learned.

When looking in to the mirror who you are expecting to see? is it your next door neighbor, or is it your class mate that you always envied their popularity in the school or is it the humble you .

The use of a mirror is reflecting  and is  one of great importance, its purpose is to reflect back to you, your appearance and give you the ability to beautify and better yourself, but like everything in this world, it can be used for good and vice versa let me explain.

There are times that when reflecting about yourself can actual be to your detriment. Here are the following examples,

©       Comparing yourself to other people
©       Extensive self criticitzim
©       Constant reflection

Gazing upon yourself is from the greatest pleasures in the world. There is no one closer to yourself than you alone; there is no one that loves you more than you yourself.

When observing yourself while gazing at your features in the reflection of the mirror, don’t you feel that feeling of love bouncing from your eyes to the mirror and back? Don’t you just enjoy talking to yourself while looking at yourself in the mirror?

To reflect on one self and examine your actions if they are in line with your goals and beliefs, is a great and sanctified attribute and is probably from the first steps you should take in your voyage of life.

As Jim Rohn used to say the first of five pieces of the puzzle in life is having a PHILOSOPHY.
Philosophy In dictionary.com- the rational investigation of the truths and principles of being, knowledge, or conduct.

TO HAVE A PHILOSOPHY, YOU WILL NEED TIME TO THINK, FOCUS AND REFLECT ON THE HAPPENINGS AND ACTIONS OF YOUR LIFE.

FIVE HEALTHY RULES ON    REFLECTING

Let’s get back on course, to set Five Healthy Rules that are needed in the process of reflecting on one self.

  1. Don’t compare yourself with others ( a better you doesn’t necessarily mean better than them)
  2. Designate specific times for reflecting ( don’t overdo it too much of judging yourself is also not healthy)
  3. Be in a happy state of mind (the purpose of reflecting is to see if change has to be made, and find solutions for change. If you are in a sad state of mind your observations and analysis cannot be fully trusted)
  4. Have an open ear to what your spouse and friends tell you ( it is sometimes hard to accept but they are not as prejudice as you are to see the truths on how you act)
  5. Believe in yourself, that you are special and you will be able to achieve any change you desire ( by believing you will find the solution and spirit to make change will give some oxygen for your brain to be able to think constructively and creatively)

So I think you’re all set so on your marks get ready and go for it, listen to that voice that is screaming out of your depth of your soul asking for that change and a time will come and you will look back happily  a and say I remember when change came into my life.

Like always I look forward to hearing back from you by leaving a comment or emailing me
Wishing you success
